Origin & Princely State

Rajkot was founded in 1610 by Thakorji Vibhoji Jadeja. It started as a princely state and over the years became a significant administrative and cultural center in the Saurashtra region. 

British Era and Infrastructure

During British rule, Rajkot came under the Kathiawar Agency. The city’s historic architecture and old city gates, some of which still stand (or are remembered), reflect this layered past.

Post-Independence Growth

After India’s independence, Rajkot continued to grow industrially. Textile, ceramics, and engineering industries became important. Over time, the city modernized, but it still preserves memories of its royal heritage — in its museums, architecture, and old neighborhoods.

Located in Jubilee Gardens, this museum showcases Rajkot’s princely history — antiques, textiles, photographs, and more. 

Sacred Heart Cathedral (Prem Mandir)

A very architecturally unique cathedral, blending Indian temple styles with church design. 

Hingolgadh Nature Education Sanctuary

In Rajkot district, this wildlife sanctuary conserves scrubland and forests and has animals like nilgai, foxes, and many bird species.

Population

The city is estimated to have about 2.1 million people now. In 2011, Rajkot district had a population of around 3.8 million. 

Literacy & Demographics

Literacy rates are quite good: in 2011, the Rajkot district literacy rate was ~80.96%. The gender balance is also relatively stable.

Climate

Rajkot has a semi-arid climate: summers can be very hot (24–42 °C), while winters are mild (10–22 °C).

There’s also tension about heritage markets — for example, the historic Lakajiraj vegetable market is facing an eviction standoff.
